2010 STATE OF THE TIGHT END ADDRESS
RECAPPING 2009
Thanks to the skyrocketing popularity of pass-first offenses, we saw the largest increase in fantasy production from the tight end position in half a decade. Although the number of tight ends that amassed 100+ fantasy points in point-per-reception (PPR) leagues (18 in 2008) remained almost unchanged (19 in 2009), there were two other compelling trends:
-
The number of tight ends that compiled 140+ fantasy points in PPR leagues rose from just seven in 2008 to 14 in 2009.
-
The number of tight ends that amassed 200+ fantasy points in PPR leagues jumped from just one in 2008 to six in 2009. Incidentally, Owen Daniels was on pace to top the 200+ scoring mark when he suffered a season-ending knee injury at mid-season.
Looking back at the elite fantasy performers, we saw mostly familiar names but also a few newcomers:
-
Fantasy TE1 Dallas Clark led his position in catches (100) and fantasy points while ranking in the top-three in both receiving yards and touchdowns.
-
Many of you acquired the fantasy TE2 and biggest surprise of the year at the position – Vernon Davis – in the lower rounds of your drafts or in your free-agent pool. Davis led all tight ends with 13 touchdown receptions.
-
With the nagging toe, hip and other injuries that had slowed him in 2007 and 2008 no longer an issue, Antonio Gates posted his most productive season since 2007, leading his position in receiving yards (1,157) and finishing as the TE3.
-
Another popular sleeper choice, Brent Celek had an average draft position in the middle of the 12th round, but he amassed fantasy TE4 numbers in the Philadelphia Eagles’ pass-heavy attack.
